One of the most splendid things about having a dog is that you always have to go out walking; every single day – whatever the weather. This means that most days I’m meeting people.
We live on a cycle route to the port of Harwich, which has ferries going to the Hook of Holland. Particularly in the summer there are many cyclists with well packed panniers like these guys in the photo.
I usually say hello to the cyclists, if it feels appropriate, and it can open doors sometimes.
As children growing up on a farm in Suffolk we had Dutch au pairs, a hole family of them; five girls, one after another. I absolutely love the Dutch accent, it takes me right back to messing about on the farm with dogs, ponies, rabbits and of course, our dear au pairs.
Moss knows I’m a chatterbox, she thinks it’s perfectly normal to stop and chat with complete strangers. Let’s say she’s used to it.
These two are a Dutch husband from Amsterdam and a Swiss wife from Bern. She’d made all the arrangements and he likes to go along for the ride.
To my eye they look like a harmonious couple.
One thing I’ve noticed about the travellers who pass through our hometown is that they are often incredibly well informed; these guys were no exception.
Not only did they know where to find the best coffee, they had also planned where to drink it!
They were going to sit in the churchyard so that they could admire the view.
That’s incredible planning!
It’s a delight to meet travellers who appreciate our neck of the woods … it’s all because I’m out just walking the dog.
