This is the 100th just-walking-the-dog - March ‘26.
We've just been away in the Canary Islands for a week. A dear friend of mine, ASF, looked after Moss. They clearly had a lovely time together, which is so gratifying. When we got back Moss was very happy to see us, and I could tell by how relaxed she was, that she’d had a good time.
How fantastic is that?
Over the years I’ve been wondering why it is that dogs are so important to us.
I think one of the reasons is that dogs offer us the chance to be more human.
They show us their insecurities.
Moss has a bit of an issue with other dogs at present. She can be quite tricky. When we meet another dog, especially if we are on a narrow path, and they are approaching us from the opposite direction, her instinct is to stalk, and then lurch towards them - like a true collie.
I can’t pretend it’s great behaviour!
Yet it gives me the opportunity to communicate with other dog people; our imperfections can help to break down barriers.
It’s rather like the great English habit of talking about the weather.
Talking about our dogs, and admitting to their shortcomings, allows us to be more human - which is a good thing.
Dogs can soften the edges of our lives.
It was lovely to have some winter sun, but I’m glad to be back in our community … with all our glorious imperfections.
