It’s 5.38am – I’m wide awake and bubbling with ideas! Harry husband snores contentedly beside me, but the world is awake – and so am I.
Why is it, I wonder that I love Moss so very much, and enjoy her company too, then this pops into my mind : -

Nobody’s life is perfect, and we’ve had a particularly rough time of late.
So why is it that I like to have a dog by my side? I think there are several reasons; she’s consistent, she’s kind, and I love her!
I think it’s the by my side part that is particularly relevant to me.
Moss is a sweetheart: she was homebred by Katherine Kent, my sister-in-law. I know that she’s had no trauma in her life, which is rare for a dog.
She is full of love and able to demonstrate it daily.
She’s also complex around other dogs.
I think it’s because of her social type and her breeding. Just this morning I had to explain Moss’s behaviour to another dog owner. Moss is an Alpha (pack leader so authoritative by nature) and also a pure Border Collie (bred to control movement). That’s a pretty potent mix.
I think that, as dog owners, we need to talk to each other more; similar to parents at the school gate, we’ve got plenty to learn from each other. Just like us, our dogs don’t behave perfectly, but most of us are doing our best.
Moss is a great inspiration to me. It’s rather like being the parent of the quirky and misunderstood kid in the class, it takes a bit of effort and imagination to find the best way forward.
I think it’s important to ask for help and guidance when things go wrong, which is where Captain Calm the dog walker comes in. I want to turn these problems on their head, and make them into a great opportunity to learn and move forward.
There’s the challenge!

In further news: I’m taking a summer break from writing justwalkingthedog. I’ve got a splendid project which will take all my brain power.
It’s exciting, and you will be the first to know more about it.
We will be feeding you out our new radio programmes on Friday afternoons as usual and trying to make sure that you get them. I have a new tech guy, named Marek, who will be helping me.
I wish you a happy summer, and in the words of Gertrude Stein:
“Dare to be happy NOW!”
justwalkingthedog will be back again on 4th September with more stories inspired by walking with Moss, our high voltage Collie dog.
