Confession time!
I confess to having been prejudice when it comes to dog breeds. My preference is for Collie types because that’s what I’m familiar with. I’m also familiar with Labradors, Spaniels and Terriers, since I was brought up with them.
Is it instinctive to be a bit wary of the unfamiliar?
Recently I was out walking by myself (without Moss) when I came across a lady with a Teacup Yorkshire Terrier, he was absolutely minute, weighing less than two kilos! I’ve simply not come across such a tiny dog before. As we chatted I discovered that her relationship with her dog was exactly the same as mine with Moss, they’re great companions.
When I dropped Moss off at the dog behaviourist, there was a pure Husky with the most penetrating blue eyes. He was incredibly handsome, but had a completely different vibe to any dog I’d met before, I wasn’t sure how to treat him.
And in our home town we have lots of Poodle crosses; Labradoodles, Cockapoos, Jackapoos … I know that they make great family dogs, but there’s another type I don’t exactly understand!
My past prejudice was not based in unkindness, it came purely from a lack of experience.
With the beginning of the merry month of May, I feel sure that now is the time to address my past prejudices and get curious about more dog breeds.
