The Walking Bus

The walking bus is the most brilliant idea. It’s been running in our hometown for almost ten years now, and in my opinion, it’s a little bit of genius! I believe it was originally inspired by seeing children walking to school in crocodiles.
Essentially, we gather at the bus stop at 9am Monday to Friday, and head off, at quite a brisk pace, walking around a circular route. People are welcome to join in, or hop off at any point throughout the route.
It’s sociable, healthy and free!
Many of the people on the bus are self-employed, and might otherwise spend much of their day on their own. There are, writers, artists and musicians, with a good sprinkling of the retired too.
The company is often fascinating with lively conversation.
Sometimes there are dogs on the bus. My two, Wavey (now deceased) and Moss, find it a little difficult, because of a dog’s natural need to sniff and pee. My solution is a long lead, so as not to break the pace.
Being a Collie, Moss’s instinct is to want to herd the group to keep us together. If we divide, it’s bothersome to her … but she has to learn to cope.
When the Walking Bus was featured on local BBC, the figures went up considerably - to perhaps twenty or thirty. Usually it’s about four to eight people, the regulars are most gracious to those of us who are only occasionals.
The walking bus is sponsored by our local osteopath, who recognises that regular walking in company is incredibly good for the mind, body and soul.
I can fully recommend it.
… and 23 minutes later, we are back at the starting place; refreshed, inspired, exercised and ready to take on the day.
