Night walking

Usually it’s Harry Husband who takes Moss out for her evening walk, but tonight he’s watching the Teenager play in a netball match, so I’m on duty. I’m finding it rather wonderful! There’s only a thin slither of moon, so it’s very dark.
My senses have become more acute, which is thrilling.
It’s mild, so I don’t have to keep myself warm. I can just open myself up to the sensations of walking with Moss in the dark.
As we walk alongside the river, I see the buoys bobbing, their lights flashing in the dark. It’s not something I notice in the light of day; it gives the river a life of its own.
In the distance I hear a fox barking, and the haunting sound of the river birds, which adds a layer of mystery.
There’s no one about except for Moss and me.
Overhead, two aeroplanes fly parallel to each other; I wonder where they are going.
As I walk away from our little town, I look back at it and see it with fresh eyes. I see it as a homestead nestling comfortably in the landscape; the lights make it look inviting, with a note of sweet innocence.
Moss is used to these night-time excursions; she darts about, running up and down the riverbank. I can see by how she scampers about that she’s happy and content. She instinctively uses her senses, especially smell. For me it’s more of a novelty!
I think I might volunteer for this job again, I’m loving it.
