The Kindness of Strangers

We all have times when nothing seems to go to plan. You know the thing, the dog has thrown up on the kitchen floor, and on your way to fill the kettle, you tread in it. Your bookmark falls out and you can’t find the right place to start reading again …
My theory is that the planets are crashing, it’s best to minimise the damage. Acceptance is the way ahead.
And then, if you are lucky, something will happen, and it can all change.
Moss and I went out for a walk along the river, as we often do. On our way home, we saw a traditional looking couple walking towards us.
Moss has been going through a bit of a phase, I think she’s coming into season, which affects her behaviour. I was feeling grumpy.
Now, this is the sweet bit …
I was deep in thought, when the woman from the traditional couple, chose to hang back and hold the gate open for me.
She didn’t make a big deal of it, it was a simple gesture of human kindness. I’m not sure that her partner even noticed!
I certainly did.
It was such a simple gesture, yet I found it utterly heart-warming. I guess it was an acknowledgement from a fellow human being.
It made me smile.
In that moment, the planets slipped back into place, and I felt certain that my week would improve.
When I got home from my walk, I remembered that amongst my collection of books, I have one entitled The Kindness of Strangers. I got it out and now it’s sitting on my desk, awaiting my attention.
Best of all, I’m able to share that precious moment with you.
