Miss Brown Eyes

It’s 4am, there’s a rattle on the gate at the bottom of the stairs, and then a small bark … the sort of bark that Harry Husband never hears. I’m awake. I sigh and get out of bed. It’s very cold. I walk carefully down the stairs.
Moss is standing looking alert between the kitchen and the sitting room.
She wants to go out.
I sigh again, loudly this time. I walk through the kitchen and open the back door. I let her out. It’s very cold, but it’s not raining. She goes out. I go back into the kitchen and pour myself a glass of water.
I sip it.
I admire the fact that Harry Husband has done all the washing up and stacked it neatly.
A few minutes later, I see Moss standing on top of the little house that Harry Husband built in the garden for the Teenager. Moss is looking about and sniffing the freezing air.
It means she’s finished doing whatever it was she needed to do. I open the back door; she walks past me wiggling in her merry way. I talk to her.
“Moss,” I say.
“Please don’t do this.”
She looks up at me with her big brown eyes and smiles.
